Shipping insurance

Coverage that reimburses the shipper if a package is lost, stolen or damaged in transit, beyond the carrier's limited liability.

Shipping insurance protects the value of a package against loss or damage in transit. It can be bought from the carrier, often as declared value coverage, or from a third-party insurer.

Third-party insurance can cost less than carrier declared value and may cover more situations, but each policy has its own exclusions, such as poor packaging or certain item types. Claims usually need proof of value and, for damage, photos of the item and packaging.
