RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization)

An approval and reference number a seller issues before a customer returns a product, used to track and process the return.

A Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) is a seller's approval for a customer to send an item back. The RMA number links the returned package to the original order and the reason for return, so the warehouse knows what to expect and how to handle it.

An RMA process usually covers checking eligibility against the return policy, issuing a return label, receiving and inspecting the item, and then refunding, exchanging or restocking.
