LCL (less than container load)

An ocean shipment that shares container space with other shippers' cargo, priced by volume or weight.

Less than container load (LCL) is an ocean freight option for shipments too small to fill a container. A consolidator combines cargo from several shippers into one container, and each shipper pays for the space its goods use, usually by cubic meter or weight, whichever is greater.

LCL cargo is loaded and unloaded at container freight stations, which adds handling and some transit time compared with FCL. It is a common way for growing brands to move inventory internationally before their volumes justify full containers.
