Fuel surcharge

A percentage added to shipping charges that moves with fuel prices, typically adjusted weekly by major carriers.

A fuel surcharge is an adjustable charge carriers add to cover changes in fuel cost. It is usually a percentage applied to the transportation charge and some surcharges, and it is tied to a published fuel price index.

Major parcel carriers update their fuel surcharge tables on a regular schedule, often weekly, with separate tables for ground, air and international services. Because it changes so often, the fuel surcharge is one reason the final invoice can differ from an old rate quote.
