First mile

The first leg of a shipment, from the seller or warehouse to the carrier's or consolidator's first facility.

The first mile is the part of a shipment's journey from where it is packed to the point where the main carrier network takes over. It can be a driver pickup, a drop-off at a carrier location, or a truck run to a sorting hub or consolidator.

For cross-border ecommerce, the first mile often includes moving parcels from many sellers to an export hub where they are consolidated for international transport.
