GlossaryRates and surcharges

Delivery area surcharge (DAS)

A carrier fee for delivering to ZIP codes that are remote, rural or otherwise more costly to serve.

A delivery area surcharge (DAS) is an extra charge for shipments to ZIP codes that carriers classify as remote or less accessible. Many carriers have several tiers, such as standard, extended and remote, each with a higher fee.

Carriers publish the list of affected ZIP codes and update it periodically. A DAS can apply alongside a residential surcharge, so a rural home delivery may carry both.
