Declared value
The value a shipper states for a package, used for customs assessment and to set a carrier's maximum liability.
Declared value has two related meanings. For customs, it is the value of the goods stated on the commercial invoice or customs declaration, which customs uses to assess duties and taxes. It should reflect the actual transaction value.
For carrier liability, declared value for carriage is the amount a shipper declares to raise the carrier's liability above its default limit, usually for an extra fee. Carriers include only a limited default liability, and their terms set exclusions and claim rules.
Declared value for carriage is not the same as insurance, though the terms are often used interchangeably.
