GlossaryCustoms and trade
Country of origin
The country where a product was manufactured or last substantially transformed, which drives duty rates and marking rules.
The country of origin is where a product was grown, manufactured or last substantially transformed into a new article. It is not necessarily the country the shipment leaves from. A product made in one country and shipped from a warehouse in another keeps its original country of origin.
Customs uses origin to decide duty rates, apply additional tariffs or trade remedies, and check eligibility for trade agreements. In the U.S., most imported goods must also be marked with their country of origin.
