the challenge
Before ExperShip.
This brand makes chocolate, confectionery and packaged snacks and sells them to U.S. shoppers online and to a small number of wholesale accounts. Food is one of the more demanding categories to ship across a border.
Packaged food imported into the U.S. falls under FDA rules, including prior notice, on top of the usual customs requirements. The brand works with a customs broker for those filings, but a broker can only work with the information it receives, and product descriptions written differently on every order made that harder.
Timing mattered too. Chocolate does not do well sitting in a hot truck, so in warmer months the team wanted faster services for those orders and a close eye on parcels in transit. Doing that by hand, order by order, took most of a person's week.

operational impact
Day to day.
The same product description, HS code and value now go out on every shipment of the same item, so the broker gets consistent information for its FDA and customs filings. Fewer orders need a correction after they ship.
Seasonal rules route chocolate to faster services when it is warm, without anyone deciding order by order. The team sees delayed parcels early, while there is still time to tell the buyer.
