the challenge

Before ExperShip.

This premium fitness brand sells leggings and tops, accessories such as straps and bottles, and workout equipment such as kettlebells, mats and compact benches. A single order can weigh a few ounces or forty pounds.

The brand used one carrier and one default service for almost everything. That kept things simple but cost money in both directions: small apparel parcels went by a service that was more than they needed, and bulky equipment picked up dimensional weight charges the team only noticed on the invoice.

International orders were handled one by one. Apparel, accessories and equipment each need a different customs description and classification, and the one person who knew how to fill them in was often the only one who could ship those orders.

operational impact

Day to day.

Rules now send light apparel and heavy equipment to the services that suit them, and rate comparison shows the options when an order does not fit a rule. Dimensional weight became something the team plans for at packing time, not a surprise on the invoice.

International orders follow the same flow as domestic ones, so anyone on the team can ship them. Shipping takes less than half the time it did, which matters most during promotions and the January rush.
