the challenge

Before ExperShip.

This distributor sells branded electronics accessories: chargers, cables, cases, small audio gear and a few heavier items such as docking stations. The catalog runs to hundreds of products, and almost every one ships differently.

A cable weighs a few ounces; a docking station is a large, dense box. Values range from a few dollars to a few hundred. Each product group also needs its own customs description and classification, and items with batteries need extra attention under carrier and import rules.

The shipping team picked a carrier for every order by hand, usually defaulting to the one they knew best. Rates were rarely compared, dimensional weight charges showed up on invoices weeks later, and a small but steady share of shipments needed their paperwork fixed after the fact.

operational impact

Day to day.

Most orders now follow a rule: small, light accessories go one way, large boxes another, and the team only steps in for the unusual ones. Comparing rates on every order shows when a different carrier is the better pick for a bulky item.

Customs data is entered with the label instead of after it, so paperwork corrections dropped. The team spends its time on exceptions and B2B orders rather than on choosing a carrier for every cable.
